A Message From the Principal

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Happy Fall! As always, welcome to our schools website. The word our truly means our children, our parents and our entire staff here at Cedar Place School.  Together, we enable our school to climb to its greatest heights!

Many parents have been asking for advice in helping their children succeed in school. Surveys show that an overwhelming number of students feel that schools do a great job teaching subject matter. However, we all know that schools cant do it alone. Parents play a vital role in helping their children develop strong study skills.

The following ideas come from several articles that I believe provide some useful suggestions:
" Help children use a planning calendar and notebook to keep track of weekly, monthly, or large projects.
" Encourage children to break down large, complex tasks into manageable pieces.
" Encourage children to complete homework tasks into manageable pieces.
" Encourage young readers to use all the clues available to them while reading, such as headlines, pictures, captions, charts, tables, and graphs.
" A discussion with children after reading a book or article helps with comprehension. Ask your children to tell you what the story was about, why it interested them or why not, and perhaps how it might relate to their own lives.

I hope these tips are helpful in helping you support your children at home. Should you wish to have more in-depth-information, always feel free to talk to your childs teacher. He or she can provide a clearer picture of your childs learning style, strengths, and weaknesses. Also, remember, if I can be of help in this or any other matter,  please feel free to call me.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Cedar Place Elementary School is to provide an educational environment which supports the growth and development of each child, and helps them to attain their fullest potential as a member of a learning community. Our goals include helping students to realize the importance of learning and education. Students will develop the skills necessary to be competent, caring, and responsible members of society. Students will display strong moral character, high self-esteem and the self motivation necessary to achieve high levels of academic success with the ability to meet the challenges of the future. In addition, this mission is best accomplished through the celebration of achievement in all areas of childhood development. With teachers as facilitators, all members of the learning community (including parents, teachers, and students) will set clear expectations which will empower students to reach their full potential.

PTA NEWS!!!

Cedar Place would like to invite all parents, family, friends and teachers to join the PTA.  Together we can enhance the education and welfare of our students.  Please consider joining, for TOGETHER we can do GREAT things!

YonkersReads!

From grades Kindergarten to Third, Cedar Place students will be participating in the enhanced Parent/Child Bookbag Program supported by Yonkers Partners in Education (YPIE), YonkersReads!

Coming soon each class will be receiving a box with about twenty-five books along with a take home packet.  In the packets there will be a reading tip sheet for parents, written in both English and Spanish.

Our hope is that these books will encourage parents to read with and/or to their children in order to enhance their reading and promote the love of books.  Even if it's just as little as 15 minutes a night, it DOES make a difference.

We are all looking forward to receiving these boxes of goodies and in yet another way pass the joy of reading onto our parents and students.
